The hard part isn't either task

You can be good at task one and good at task two, and still find the space between them nearly impossible. That's not a contradiction. Switching itself is a distinct kind of effort — cognitive flexibility, the ability to disengage from what you're doing and re-engage somewhere else — and it's a common friction point for ADHD brains regardless of how capable you are at either side of the switch.

That's why "just move on to the next thing" can sound so simple and land so badly. The instruction skips over the actual difficulty entirely.

What makes the gap harder

A few things reliably make transitions worse. Ending one task abruptly, with no signal that it's about to end, removes any chance to prepare for the switch. Moving into something with no clear shape — "figure out what's next" instead of a known next step — adds a decision on top of a switch that was already going to be hard. And doing this without any external cue at all, purely on internal willpower, asks the least reliable resource to do the most work.

Building your own signals

You don't need someone else's bell schedule. You need something that plays the same role: an external, unambiguous marker that a switch is coming, arriving before the switch itself.

  • A warning before the transition, not just a marker at the moment it happens — five or ten minutes ahead, so the switch isn't a surprise.
  • A short, repeatable ritual for the gap itself — even sixty seconds of something physical between tasks gives the disengage-and-reengage process somewhere to happen, instead of expecting it to happen instantly.
  • A known next step, decided before you need it — arriving at a transition with no idea what's next adds a second hard problem on top of the first.

Why this matters beyond convenience

Transitions that go badly compound. A rough switch at 9am tends to make the 11am switch rougher too, because there's now residual friction carried forward. Treating the space between tasks as its own thing to manage — not an afterthought between two "real" tasks — is often the highest-leverage change available, precisely because it's the part everyone else's advice skips over.
