The clock was right there
The clock was visible. You looked at it, even. And somehow forty minutes passed between glancing at it and glancing at it again, with no clear memory of where the time went. This is one of the more disorienting versions of time blindness, because it isn't about forgetting to check — the checking happened, and the information still didn't stick.
The research on ADHD and time perception is broad: deficits show up across multiple different tasks — discriminating short intervals, estimating how long something lasted, reproducing a duration on command. A standard analog or digital clock asks you to do continuous background tracking and self-interruption, both at once. That's exactly the combination this research says is harder to sustain.
What a clock doesn't give you
A clock tells you what time it is. It doesn't tell you that now is the moment to act on that information — that second step, the one that triggers a response rather than just supplying a fact, is where things tend to break down. Knowing it's 2:47 and knowing that 2:47 means "leave now" are two different cognitive events, and the gap between them is where fifteen minutes disappears.
Tools that force the second step
The fix isn't a better clock. It's a tool that closes the gap between "time has passed" and "act now":
- A visual timer that shrinks as time runs out, rather than a static number you have to actively interpret.
- Recurring interval alarms, not a single end-time alarm — a nudge every fifteen or twenty minutes keeps you from needing to self-monitor continuously.
- Wearing the alarm, not just hearing it from a phone across the room — a watch buzz is harder to tune out than a phone notification.
This isn't a discipline gap. It's a mismatch between the tool and the way your attention actually works — and once you swap the tool, a lot of the friction goes with it.
